オバマ大統領は10月５日、環境、エネルギー、経済に関する大統領令に署名しました。クリーンエネルギー経済を創出し、エネルギー安全保障を促進し、環境を守るために、連邦政府機関が率先して見本を示すよう指示しています。各機関は温室効果ガス削減のための目標を設定することや、2020年までの車両の石油使用量の30％減少させること、水の使用効率を26％向上させることなどが求められています。

テレワークに関するOPMの報告書 (9/24/09)

テレワークに関する統計報告書が、人事管理局（OPM）から９月16日に公表されました。コンピューターなどの情報通信技術を利用した在宅勤務など、場所や時間の制約を受けずに働いている連邦の行政府職員についてまとめられています。2007年と比較すると2008年のテレワーク人口は8,257人増加し、102,900人となりました。テレワークが増加した省庁として、保健・福祉省と内務省が挙げられ、商務省と国防総省などでは減少しました。報告書の冒頭で、仕事と家庭のバランス、大気汚染減少、値上がりするガソリン、新型インフルエンザの脅威などの影響で、テレワークの便宜性は今後より重要になってくるとOPMのディレクターは述べています。

2008年大統領選挙に関する統計 (7/21/09)

米商務省国勢調査局は７月20日、2008年の大統領選挙における有権者登録や投票率に関する統計データを公表しました。それによると、2008年には全国で約１億3100万人が投票しており、アフリカ系やヒスパニック系の投票者数の増加のため、2004年に比較して約500万人多くなっています。また、投票率は2004年と変わらず64％ですが、18歳から24歳の若年層では投票率が増加しています。

オバマ大統領は５月11日、ホワイトハウスで米国民の窓口の役割を担ってきたOffice of Public Liaisonの名称を、Office of Public Engagement (OPE)に変更し、これまで以上に国民の考えや意見が大統領に届くための使命を果たすと発表しました。また、大統領は、国民からの声をまとめた "Citizens' Briefing Book"を発表しました。この本は、旧政権から現政権への移行期間中に、経済や教育、外交など様々な主題について市民から考えを募り、支持の高かったアイデアをまとめたものです。125,000人が44,000のアイデアを提出し、どのアイデアがよいかについて140万の投票がありました。

オバマ米大統領は２月24日、米議会上下両院合同本会議で初の議会演説を行いました。この演説で、米国の抱える深刻な経済危機に対し、長期的に経済を成長させるエネルギー、医療、教育への投資の必要性を指摘しました。また、国防予算をはじめとする政府歳出の抜本的改革を進め、向こう10年間で少なくとも２兆ドルの歳出節減の余地があると言明しました。大統領はこのほか、地球温暖化対策、イラク・アフガニスタン政策など幅広い分野の課題に言及しています。

ESTA電子渡航認証システムの義務化 (1/9/09)

2009年１月12日より、日本を含むすべてのビザ免除プログラム対象国の旅行者は、ビザなしで短期商用あるいは観光目的（90日以下）で米国に渡航する場合、米国行きの航空機や船舶に搭乗する前にオンラインで渡航認証を受けることが義務化されます。以下のウェブサイトで申請手続きを行うことができます。

なお「グアムビザ免除プログラム」を利用してグアムに渡航する場合、機械読取式パスポート、e-パスポート（IC旅券）の所持義務はありません。 ESTA渡航認証を申請する必要もありません。グアムに16日以上滞在する場合や、グアムから米国の他の都市に引き続き移動する場合は通常のビザ免除プログラム（VWP）を利用してグアムに渡航する事が可能です。
